The 3 V's to Success

I will never forget sitting in the crowded banquet hall in an upscale hotel in Houston, Texas. As an budding teen, I was excited and eager to take on the world and catapult instantly to a successful business career. The keynote speaker quietly approached the podium to address the room full of interns and confidently said while holding up four fingers, "There are only three keys to success." At this point, I was more intrigued by the fact that he said "three," while showing four fingers. Was this man crazy? Is he aware of the mistake he's making? With a measured pause, he continued. "There are three v's to success. Vision. Values. And vehicles," he said while illustrating that his four fingers actually made three v's. "That was cool," I thought. More than 30 years later, I have never forgotten that speech and I will never forget the 3 V's to Success--vision, values, and vehicles (resources).

Vision, [good] values, and vehicles or effective resource utilization are critical components of success in life. Without a clear understanding of what you want to achieve, a strong set of guiding principles, and a proactive approach to utilizing the resources available, it is difficult to make meaningful progress towards your goals.

Vision is an essential component of success because it provides direction and purpose. When you have a clear vision of what you want to achieve, you can more easily make decisions and take action that align with your desired outcomes. A well-defined vision can serve as a guidepost, helping to keep you on track when you encounter obstacles or distractions.

Good values are also critical to success. Values are a set of beliefs and principles that guide behavior, and they can have a profound impact on how you approach challenges and opportunities. For example, if you are someone who values honesty and integrity, you are more likely to make decisions that align with those principles, even when it may be difficult or unpopular. Similarly, if you value hard work and dedication, you're more likely to put in the effort required to achieve your goals.

Using resources effectively is another critical component of success. Resources can come in many forms, including financial capital, social capital, knowledge, skills, and time. By identifying and leveraging the resources available to you, you are more likely to achieve your goals. For example, if you're starting a business, you might seek out mentorship from experienced entrepreneurs, tap into their network to find investors or partners, and invest in your own education and skill development.

Taken together, vision, [good] values, and vehicles create a powerful foundation for success. With a clear sense of purpose, a strong set of guiding principles, and a proactive approach to leveraging resources, you can achieve great things and make a positive impact in the world. Of course, success is not guaranteed, and setbacks and challenges are inevitable. However, by staying focused on your vision, remaining true to your values, and using your resources effectively, you can persevere and ultimately achieve your goals.
